Near Retirement

The years immediately prior to and right after retirement are some of the most critical for your finances while at the same time being some of the most stressful for you given the emotions of the transitions.  Having a well-thought plan in place that provides direction for cash flow needs, investment allocation, and other areas such as health insurance can instill confidence and remove many of the potential stressors that come with retirement.  Common questions we help our clients navigate include the following:

  • Do I have enough to retire and fund our desired lifestyle?

  • At what point should we start adjusting risk in our portfolio?

  • How much cash should I be holding leading up to and when entering retirement?

  • How might health care costs impact us in retirement?

  • When should I/we start to draw Social Security?  What are some reasons I shouldn't take it right away?

  • When should I start drawing from my retirement accounts?

  • How can I minimize taxes?

A core focus of ours is to help client's create a feeling of freedom in their financial lives.  Freedom to make decisions that drive your quality life and put your energy towards life experiences rather than worrying about your money.  Let us answer your questions so that you can enjoy the years leading up to and transitioning into retirement.

Retirees

Retirement is often referred to as an event or a moment in time.  We look at it as an ever-evolving phase of life and believe your financial plan should be evolving along with it.  Below are a list of questions that we believe you should be considering and having conversation around (with a spouse and/or your advisor) that will help ensure your plan is working for you in the most purposeful way.

  • How has my life and interests changed since I retired?

  • What do I wish that I had more time for?

  • How have our family dynamics shifted and what impact does that have on our goals or concerns about the future?

  • Have I planned well enough for my money to continue supporting my current lifestyle?

  • What changes do I forecast occurring in the next 12-24 months?  In the next 5 years?

  • When was my last estate plan review?  Have I properly planned for future distribution of my assets?

  • How can I better prepare for current and future tax obligations?

  • How should my investment allocation change in retirement?

You only have one retirement - Take a proactive approach and make sure that your plan has the flexibility and thoroughness for you to maximize your opportunities and your time.
